Anxiety and stress in our culture
Perhaps you are feeling anxious, burnt out or stressed, and feel in need of a safe, caring, space where you can re-set body, mind and nervous system, whilst learning tools to enhance your all-important wellbeing?
You are not alone: anxiety is one of the most prevalent health issues of our time: in a 2023 survey by the Mental Health Foundation, up to 60% of adults in the UK reported experiencing anxiety levels that interfered with their everyday life in the previous two week period.
Whilst low, contained levels of anxiety and stress are a normal, even healthy, response to external events, problems arise when we experience symptoms persistently - and when this interferes with our everyday wellbeing. Persistent anxiety may have a detrimental impact on our sleep, mood, concentration, relationships and behaviour.
Working somatically with anxiety
Shifting chronic anxiety can be challenging, and can be beyond the scope of talking therapy alone: this is because it is often has complex, deep-seated causes and because it is often deeply embedded in our bodies and nervous systems as well as in our minds.
Anxiety can feel very physical: we may experience shortness of breath, racing heartbeat, sweaty hands, chronic tension in shoulders or jaw. Left unchecked it can lead to a host of serious problems associated with high blood pressure and weakened immunity.
I take a largely body-based approach to working with anxiety, stress and burnout, and offer a powerful blend of very gentle movement (which can be chair-based), deep guided relaxation and mindfulness (working compassionately with body, thoughts and emotions as we experience them in the present moment).
As an experienced mindfulness teacher and trainee counsellor I offer empathy, kindness and a listening ear, offering a safe, confidential space for you to regulate natural human emotions, thoughts and feeling through a somatic approach.
My experience working with anxiety and burn-out
I have taught the gold-standard eight-week mindfulness course, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction, over many years, and also specialist courses in Yoga and Mindfulness for Anxiety. I have trained to work with clients experiencing Chronic Fatigue (and other conditions related to burn-out) with Fiona Agombar, a specialist in this field. As a trainee integrative therapeutic counsellor I have a particular interest in the causes of stress and anxiety manifest and how they can limit our capacity to live a full life.
